چکیده

Article history: Received 19 May 2009 Received in revised form 13 July 2009 Accepted 22 August 2009 Available online 15 September 2009 A latent variable analysis was conducted to examine the nature of individual differences in lapses of attention and their relation to executive and fluid abilities. Participants performed a sustained attention task along with multiple measures of executive control and fluid abilities. Lapses of attention were indexed based on the slowest reaction times in terms of both quintiles and the τ parameter from the ex-Gaussian distribution. It was found that the slowest, but not the fastest, RTs in the sustained attention task were related to a broad based executive control factor and a fluid intelligence factor. The results further suggested that only the working memory capacity and response inhibition sub-executive control factors were related to the slowest RTs, with the fluency measures not being related to any of the RT variables. The results are consistent with the idea that fluctuations or lapses in sustained attention, as indexed by the slowest responses, are related to executive control and fluid abilities. © 2009 Elsevier Inc. Similarities and differences between mind-wandering and external distraction: a latent variable analysis of lapses of attention and their relation to cognitive abilities.

The current study examined the extent to which task-unrelated thoughts represent both vulnerability to mind-wandering and susceptibility to external distraction from an individual difference perspective. Participants performed multiple measures of attention control, working memory capacity, and fluid intelligence. Task-unrelated thoughts were assessed using thought probes during the attention c...

Variation in cognitive failures: An individual differences investigation of everyday attention and memory failures

The present study examined individual differences in everyday cognitive failures assessed by diaries. A large sample of participants completed various cognitive ability measures in the laboratory. Furthermore, a subset of these participants also recorded everyday cognitive failures (attention, retrospective memory, and prospective memory failures) in a diary over the course of a week. Using lat...

The Contribution of Attentional Lapses to Individual Differences in Visual Working Memory Capacity

Attentional control and working memory capacity are important cognitive abilities that substantially vary between individuals. Although much is known about how attentional control and working memory capacity relate to each other and to constructs like fluid intelligence, little is known about how trial-by-trial fluctuations in attentional engagement impact trial-by-trial working memory performa...
